Gold for Romania at the European Championships of fencing

LEGNANO, ITALY | Simona Gherman defeated Anca Maroiu and won the European title. Gherman won the gold medal in the sword competition at the European Championships in Legnano (Italy), after passing by another Romanian, Anca Maroiu, with the score 15-6. 

In the semifinals, Gherman defeated Russian player Liubov Sutova, 15-13, and Maroiu won in front of the German contestant Sozanska Monica, 15-13 as well. Also in Legnano, but in the male sword contest, Dolcineanu Tiberiu was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Russian Alexei Iakimenko at the score of 15-12, who won the title in the end. In rounds, Iakimenko defeated another Romanian, Rares Dumitrescu, score 15-11. Iakimenko won his third consecutive European title after he won the final, like last year, in front of the French representative Boladé Apithy (15-12).
