LISBON | “Portugal! Portugal! Portugal,” chanted thousands of elated supporters in Marques de Pombal Square in Lisbon, traditionally used to celebrate the successes, on Thursday evening after the Lusitanian National qualified in the Euro-2012 semifinals.
Fans waving red and green flags flooded the streets of Lisbon immediately after the final whistle of the match against the Czech Republic, 1-0, in Warsaw. Many fans celebrated with a “concert” of horns, while others hugged, drinking beer, dancing and singing the national anthem. “Anything can happen now”, said a young fan who had a flag of Portugal around his neck. “This victory is the best answer you could give to those who doubted us. They turned to silence those who criticized the team this very evening”, the fan told reporters.
