Failure of Vladimir Putin and Viktor Yanukovych to reach a compromise on gas price

UNSTABILITY | Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych failed to obtain a drop in the price of Russian gas delivered to his country, after a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, held on Thursday at Yalta, Crimea.  “We have several cases on which we have not reached an agreement at this time”, Putin said during a press conference with the President of Ukraine.

Kiev has already obtained in 2010 a decrease in the price, which enabled the country to save eight billion dollars. Putin avoided the question of the conditions under which Russia would agree to reduce the price of gas delivered to Ukraine, existing contracts remaining in use. The gas price for Ukraine is comparable to that applied to other European countries, Russian president also said.
