WASHINGTON | Obama administration officials are working on plans for the event that the Syrian Government collapses, focusing particularly on Syrian chemical weapons that are supposedly possess and could be used. There is suspicion that the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad could use chemical weapons against his opposition forces and civilians, emphasizes the New York Times Electronic Edition.
According to American publication, in the background, government plans have already reached the stage of what is done after the expected downfall of al-Assad and how government could show such a collapse. In his desperation, al-Assad could use chemical weapons to stop the revolt, the possibility to produce a “huge concern”, said officials quoted.
In this context, the Pentagon officials talked to Israeli defense officials that Israel would be appropriate to intervene to destroy Syrian weapons storage, said two officials within the administration. Washington does not promote such an attack, they stressed it because of the risk of giving al-Assad the opportunity to rally support for Israel against the interference.
